The Myth of Easy Passion
We've all heard the advice to follow our passion, but if you're like me and my friends, you know that it's not as simple as it sounds. Some of my buddies are well into their 30s and are still searching for that elusive passion, apart from their love for Pokémon and Dragon Ball. Some have even changed career paths multiple times and are no closer to discovering what truly drives them.
Passion Isn't Just About Talent
One common misconception is that passion is something you're naturally good at. This idea often lures young people into believing that they should stick with what they excel at during their teenage years. They take their parents' or mentors' praise to heart and assume that's their calling. But the truth is, as life unfolds, our tastes change. You might stumble upon a niche you didn't even know existed. So, it's crucial to stay open to new possibilities.
Explore the World of Opportunities
Discovering your passion is a journey best started in your adolescent years. The more exposure you get, the better your chances of uncovering your true calling. Unfortunately, some of us, including me, had limited exposure to different fields during our youth. We thought our career options were limited to being an engineer or a doctor because we simply didn't know what else was out there. I followed my parents' advice, believing it was the path I was supposed to take.
Try Everything and Anything
To find your passion, you have to dive into life's opportunities headfirst. Try a little bit of everything. Go trekking, volunteer for charity, intern at your parents' workplace, attend church, experience a concert, engage in atheist conventions, break things, fix things, succeed at some and fail at others. Build stuff, both small and grand, and nurture your ideas. It's only by trying out diverse experiences that you'll gain insights into what truly excites you.
Embrace Change Courageously
Don't be afraid to switch tracks in life if you feel your current path isn't your true calling. It might go against the wishes of your friends and family, but remember, you're the one who has to live with the choices you make. Grinding through a job or career you're unsure about isn't truly living; it's surviving. Even if you're in your 30s, 40s, or beyond, don't shy away from learning new skills or venturing into uncharted territory. Have the courage to try new things, and remember that fortune often favors the bold.
In Search of Your Passion
In a world that constantly changes and offers a vast array of experiences, finding your passion isn't a one-size-fits-all journey. It might not be easy, and it might not happen quickly, but that's perfectly okay. The key is to keep exploring, trying, failing, and learning. Life is an adventure, and your passion is waiting for you to uncover it, no matter how long it takes. So, be bold, be open, and enjoy the ride.
