Doctors just might have to learn typing also.

In today’s digital era, technology has revolutionized healthcare, and typing has become an essential skill for physicians. As hospitals and clinics move toward digital health records and paperless environments, the ability to type efficiently is no longer just a useful tool—it’s a necessity. This blog post explores why learning to type is crucial for physicians and how you can train yourself to master it.

Why Typing is Relevant for Physicians Today

1. The Shift to Digital Health Records

The adoption of Electronic Health Records (EHR) has transformed how medical information is stored and shared. Whether it's entering patient histories, prescriptions, or treatment plans, physicians must document a significant amount of data on a daily basis. Learning to type fast and accurately improves the speed and quality of this documentation, reducing errors and saving valuable time during patient care.

2. Faster Data Entry and Recovery

Typing efficiently allows you to record patient data swiftly without compromising on quality. Speedy data entry can lead to quicker retrieval of vital medical information, which is critical in emergency situations. It also ensures that the patient’s information is available for immediate review by other healthcare providers, promoting smoother communication across teams.

3. Faster Preparation for Presentations, Thesis, and Research Papers

In academia and professional growth, physicians often have to prepare for conferences, presentations, and research publications. Efficient typing significantly speeds up the process of drafting these materials. Whether you're working on a PowerPoint presentation, writing a research thesis, or preparing manuscripts, fast typing enables you to focus more on content quality rather than getting bogged down by slow data entry. This skill is especially useful when meeting tight deadlines for journal submissions or preparing research grant proposals.

4. Increased Efficiency in the Office

Mastering typing enables you to take notes during consultations without pausing the conversation, maintaining patient engagement. It also facilitates faster communication via email or medical portals, allowing for more timely responses to colleagues and patients.

Long-term Benefits of Learning Typing

1. Time Management

By typing faster, physicians can save a significant amount of time daily. The minutes saved during patient documentation, email correspondence, and form filling can add up, creating space for additional consultations, professional development, or personal time.

2. Reduced Burnout

Efficient typing reduces the time spent on administrative tasks, which are often a major source of burnout for physicians. Automating or speeding up these routine tasks allows more focus on patient care and reduces the fatigue associated with documentation overload.

3. Improved Productivity

Mastering typing enables multitasking without slowing down. You can effectively manage patient records, send emails, conduct research, and input notes simultaneously. Over time, this increased productivity has a positive impact on both your career and patient outcomes.

How to Train Yourself to Type Efficiently

1. Start with the Basics

If you’re not familiar with touch typing, it’s essential to start with basic typing lessons that teach you finger placement and muscle memory. Touch typing allows you to type without looking at the keyboard, which saves time and improves accuracy.

2. Set Achievable Goals

Start by setting small, manageable typing speed goals. For instance, aim for 40 words per minute (WPM) initially, and gradually work your way up. Consistent daily practice can lead to significant improvements in speed and accuracy.

3. Track Your Progress

Use typing test websites to measure your WPM and accuracy. This will give you a clear idea of where you need improvement and help keep you motivated as you see your progress over time.

They will give words which doesnt exist though.
